The US Embassy in the Green Zone of Baghdad was attacked with 14 Katyusha missiles, causing material damage but no casualties. No group has claimed responsibility, but there is speculation of a connection with Iranian militants. This is the first attack on the embassy since October 7.

On the morning of  December 8, the fortified "green zone" where the United States Embassy is located in the Iraqi capital Baghdad was fired upon with rockets. This was reported by UNN with reference to AP.

According to the Iraqi security service, 14 Katyusha missiles were fired on December 8. Some of them fell near the embassy gates, others into the river. According to a representative of the service, the missile attack caused material damage, but there were no casualties.

The U.S. Embassy says that as of Friday morning, no specific group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but there are indications that the strike was carried out by militants with ties to Iran.

The US military reported that a total of 78 attacks on US facilities have been carried out in recent weeks, 37 of which were in Iraq and 41 in Syria.

At the same time, the publication notes that this is the first confirmed attack on the US Embassy in Iraq since the beginning of the war between Israel and the Hamas group on October 7.

Approximately 2,500 US troops are stationed in Iraq and about 900 others in eastern Syria, where they are carrying out missions against the Islamic State group.
