These are funds from the large funding package approved by Congress in April, which included aid for Ukraine. It included $14 billion for Israel.
According to a State Department spokesperson, Congress was informed of the administration's intentions to allocate this aid to Israel.
The publication adds that the announcement came amid heightened tensions in the Middle East and an expected attack by Iran and its proxies in Lebanon against Israel in response to the killing of a Hamas leader by a rocket attack while he was in Iran.
