Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk has become the new champion at the WTA 1000 tournament in Spain, UNN reports with reference to BTU (Great Tennis of Ukraine).
Details
The Ukrainian defeated world number eight Mirra Andreeva (-, 9) 6:3, 7:5 and won the biggest title of her career.
The Ukrainian tennis player extended her record winning streak to 12 matches, winning the third title of her career. She won her first in 2023 at the WTA 250 tournament in Austin, and her second two weeks ago at the WTA 250 tournament in Rouen.
Kostyuk is the second Ukrainian to win a WTA 1000 tournament. The first was Elina Svitolina, who achieved this four times (Dubai-2017, Rome-2017, Toronto-2017, Rome-2018).
Today, Kostyuk also secured her 14th career victory over a top-ten opponent, and her fifth this year.
Marta Kostyuk, currently ranked 23rd, became the second champion in the history of the Madrid tournament (since 2009) to be ranked outside the top 20 at the time of her victory. The first time this occurred was in 2010, when Frenchwoman Aravane Rezaï (No. 24) won the title.
On Monday, the Ukrainian will return to the world top twenty for the first time since January and will set a new personal record, rising to 15th place (+8).
