The White House announced the disbandment of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder. This decision is part of the Donald Trump administration's broader strategy to cut funding for climate research. Reuters reports this, writes UNN.

Details

US Office of Management and Budget Director Ross Vought previously called the research "one of the biggest sources of climate alarmism in the country."

A comprehensive review, and any vital activities such as weather research, will be moved to another organization or location

– Vought emphasized.

In addition to eliminating NCAR, the White House proposes cutting the budget of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) by $1.33 billion (28%), and funding for its scientific division (OAR) by 75%. This will effectively halt the agency's core work in climatology.

Threat to national security and competitiveness

Colorado Governor Jared Polis sharply criticized the decision, emphasizing the center's importance for disaster forecasting.

NCAR provides data on severe weather events such as fires and floods, which helps our country save lives and property, and prevent destruction for families

– the governor stated.

He also warned that "if these cuts continue, we will lose our competitive edge over foreign nations and adversaries in the pursuit of scientific discovery."

Currently, NCAR's tools, including weather and Earth system forecasting models, are critically important to the international scientific community and US government agencies.
