After Ukraine gained independence on the basis of Airborne Troops of the Soviet army in the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine were formed airmobile troops. In 2012, they were renamed highly mobile paratroopers who were part of the ground forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine until 2016.

The first celebration of DSHV day of the Armed Forces of Ukraine took place on November 21, 2017 on Mikhailovskaya Square in Kiev. Tasks of amphibious assault troops, participation in the war

The main tasks of the airborne assault forces are:
– violation of the control of the troops and the work of the enemy's rear;
- preventing the planned use of reserves by the enemy;
- fight against airborne troops and enemy groups that have broken through;
- the occupation and maintenance of important objects and frontiers in order to ensure the smooth and timely operational deployment of own troops and forces in designated operational zones and districts.
since 2014, when the Anti-Terrorist Operation/JFO began in eastern Ukraine, and since the full-scale Russian invasion in February 2022, amphibious assault troops are fighting in the hottest sectors of the front.
