The United States has suspended aid to Georgia over the adoption of a law similar to Russia's "foreign agents" law, which is considered incompatible with democratic values and jeopardizes Georgia's path to Euro-Atlantic integration.

After the indefinite postponement of the Worthy Partner 2024 military exercises, the United States suspended assistance to Georgia. The decision was caused by the adoption of the law on foreign agents in Georgia. Written by UNN with reference to Deutsche Welle.

The reason for this decision was the adoption in Georgia of a law on foreign agents similar to the Russian one.

"As a result of this law, the United States has frozen aid to Georgia, and there is no integration into the European Union," said U.S. Under Secretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy and Human Rights Uzra Zea.

It did not say what kind of aid to Georgia was frozen.

"Concerns about Georgia's anti-democratic trajectory are global, and we urge the Georgian government to heed them," said Zea.

According to her, representatives of the United States and the European Union regularly expressed their concerns to the government, both at public events and in private meetings.

"I think we can only conclude that Georgia's current path is incompatible with the democratic values that underpin membership in the European Union and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, and thus jeopardize Georgia's path to Euro-Atlantic integration," Zea said.

Recall

The European Union admits that against the background of the law on foreign agents adopted in Georgia, the EU may reconsider the visa-free regime with Tbilisi.
