Last year, Secretary of State for Digital Affairs Alexandra van Huffelen asked the Dutch privacy regulator Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens for advice, and now AP recommends that Facebook pages be suspended until the company provides public information about its personal data processing.
The minister initiated the study after Meta refused to change its approach to processing information collected about visitors to government pages. Negotiations with the company have been going on for a year.
We don't know if companies like Meta ask for permission to process data properly, which means that the ministry may not be in compliance with government regulations.
Government officials are now planning to ask Meta for the AP's recommendation, and Van Huffelen said she expects to receive a comprehensive response from the social network before the summer vacation begins.
If this does not happen, we will have to follow AP's advice and stop using our Facebook pages.
It is noted that the Ministry of Internal Affairs has not updated its Facebook page, which has only 21,000 followers, since October 20. At the same time, other ministries continue to actively use their pages.
People visiting a government website should be able to be sure that their personal and sensitive data is in good hands. This is even more important because we are talking about information about children and adolescents who are vulnerable online and need extra protection.
Last year, a court in the Netherlands ruled that Facebook violated the law by processing personal data of the country's residents.
According to the court, Facebook Ireland used this information for advertising purposes without legal grounds and transferred it to other companies without a proper legal basis. In addition, the court found that Facebook did not properly inform users about the dissemination of their information and that the data of their Facebook friends would also be transferred.
