Sweden’s opposition bloc has 50.6% support, compared with 46.9% for the coalition, with the gap narrowing to 3.7 percentage points. The rise in support for the Christian Democrats to 7.5% contributed to this.

Sweden’s Social Democratic opposition bloc has approximately halved its lead over the ruling coalition over the summer, a month before the country’s general election, according to the results of a Demoskop poll. Bloomberg reports, UNN writes.

Details

The four opposition parties together could receive 50.6% of the vote, while the current ruling coalition led by Moderate Party Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson would receive 46.9%. Thus, the gap has narrowed to 3.7 percentage points from 7.6 points in June. According to Demoskop, this is the smallest difference between the blocs since autumn 2023.

One of the reasons, it is noted, is the growing popularity of the Christian Democrats, led by Deputy Prime Minister Ebba Busch, to 7.5%—the party’s highest figure in six years. Demoskop said that this increase is partly explained by some voters switching between political camps.

Ahead of the September 13 vote, the situation for Kristersson’s bloc remains difficult: the Liberals are receiving 2.4% support, below the 4% threshold for entering parliament. According to Demoskop’s calculations, in that case the opposition would receive 186 seats in parliament, compared with 163 for the coalition led by the Moderate Party.
