"We are very focused on this (the demilitarization of Hamas - ed.). Some progress has been made on this issue, despite Hamas's public statements. But ultimately we have to see it, and we hope that in the coming days we will have good news on this matter,"
According to him, U.S. partners, including Egypt and Turkey, are involved in the process.
"Over the weekend, some encouraging signs emerged that we are moving closer to an agreement on their demilitarization. But it has to happen. This project will only work in full if Hamas is demilitarized. Until that happens, everything is in question,"
Rubio did not specify whether the U.S. would support the resumption of Israeli military operations if negotiations fail, noting: "Let's hope we can avoid that. That is not the outcome we want."
In mid-April, the U.S. and Hamas held their first direct talks since the Gaza truce was established, as part of efforts to advance the fragile agreement.
