The search for survivors continues after a powerful earthquake in southwestern Japan killed 13 people.
Rescuers are searching through the rubble of the Aeon shopping center in the city of Kashima and the Nippon Paper factory in Yatsushiro, which Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi called a "race against time."
"Although more than 20 hours have passed since the earthquake, there are still those who need help," Takaichi said.
A day after the earthquake in Kumamoto Prefecture, survivors are clearing debris and furniture from their damaged homes. One survivor, a 75-year-old restaurant owner, said yesterday's earthquake was the strongest he had ever experienced and that he thought he would die.

The earthquake occurred on Tuesday afternoon, with a magnitude of 7.1 according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. The U.S. Geological Survey estimated its magnitude at 6.8.
