For reference
During the Second World War, under German occupation, several partisan movements operated on the territory of Ukraine. These included units of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) and the Polish Home Army (AK). They fought mainly in Volyn.
According to article from the Encyclopedia of the History of Ukraine, in Polish historiography, the events of 1943 are often interpreted only as an anti-Polish action of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, while in Ukrainian historiography, the motives that prompted the UPA to conduct such an action are emphasized, and considerable attention is paid to "retaliatory actions," including against the Ukrainian civilian population and units of the Home Army (AK).
The Volyn tragedy of 1943 is called one of the bloodiest episodes of the Ukrainian-Polish conflict during World War II in Volyn.
