US Defense Minister Pete Hegseth said on Sunday that the United States will ensure "strong, rapid and reliable deterrence" in the Indo-Pacific region, including the Taiwan Strait, in response to China's increased military pressure on the island.
During his visit to Japan, Hegseth joined Japanese Defense Minister Gena Nakatani in condemning China's "aggressive" actions.

The Pentagon chief's speech came after his meeting with Japanese Defense Minister General Nakatani and Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.
Context
The leadership in Beijing views democratic Taiwan as a renegade province that must be reunited with the mainland - if necessary, by military force. In recent years, Beijing has stepped up its military activities around Taiwan to underscore its claims to sovereignty.
