Details

A peace summit in Central Africa, which was supposed to end the bloody conflict that has been going on for years in the north of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on the border with Rwanda, was unexpectedly canceled today.

“The trilateral meeting was canceled because the Rwandan delegation refused to participate in the meeting,” he said.

According to the Congolese president, Rwanda, having ties with the powerful rebel group “March 23 Movement” (M23), which opposes the Armed Forces of the DRC (FARDC), caused the signing of a hypothetical peace agreement by the “organization of direct dialogue” between the DRC and the M23 terrorists.

At a meeting on Saturday between the foreign ministers of the two countries and Angola, which is mediating at the request of the African Union (AU), the DRC rejected Rwanda's proposal.

Context

Presidents Paul Kagame of Rwanda and Felix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of Congo were to meet again today in Luanda at a trilateral summit mediated by the Angolan head of state. The goal was to find a solution for peace in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Since 2020, Angola has hosted several summits to achieve peace in the region as part of regional efforts promoted by organizations in which it participates.

Angolan President João Lourenço, as a mediator appointed by the African Union, tried to achieve a ceasefire between armed groups operating in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, calling for a dialogue between the parties involved.

Last month, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda reached an agreement on a plan to disband the rebel group Forces démocratiques de libération du Rwanda.

The conflict has destabilized eastern DR Congo and fuels fears of wider conflict in the Great Lakes region. Between 1996 and 2003, two wars took place here, killing millions of people.

Recall

The Chadian authorities have released a group of Russians and a Belarusian, including propagandist Maxim Shugaley, who is linked to the Wagner PMC. They were detained in September 2024 during the country's presidential elections.

Earlier , UNN reported that the UK sent the first migrant to Rwanda under a voluntary deportation program, which plans to pay asylum seekers about $3,700 to move to the African country.
