German coach Jürgen Klopp has taken over the German national football team. Klopp signed a 4-year contract and will prepare the team for the 2028 European Championship and the 2030 World Cup. This was reported by the German Football Association (DFB), according to UNN.
Details
"Jürgen Klopp will become the new head coach of the German men's national team. The 59-year-old specialist signed a four-year contract today at the DFB campus in Frankfurt am Main and will thus lead the national team at the 2028 European Championship and the 2030 World Cup. The supervisory board and the general meeting of shareholders of DFB GmbH & Co. KG had previously unanimously supported the proposal of DFB President Bernd Neuendorf and DFB First Vice President Hans-Joachim Watzke," the statement said.
Klopp will replace Julian Nagelsmann, who resigned on July 3, effective August 15.
"Peter Krawietz, Pepijn Lijnders, and Sven Bender will join the German Football Association as assistant coaches. Krawietz and Lijnders are long-time associates of Klopp, with whom they won, among other things, the 2019 UEFA Champions League and the 2020 English championship title at Liverpool. The 43-year-old Dutchman Lijnders most recently worked as an assistant to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City. The 54-year-old Krawietz, who previously worked with Klopp during his time at Mainz and Dortmund, is also moving to the German Football Association from Red Bull. Sven Bender returns after working as an assistant coach in Dortmund and head coach in Unterhaching. The seven-time national team player already worked at the DFB from 2022 to 2024 as an assistant coach for the U-16 and U-17 national teams," the Football Association added.
As Klopp stated: "The national team can unite us Germans like few other things. That is what makes this task so special for me."
"I am grateful for everything I got to experience and learn over the last year and a half at Red Bull, as well as for the openness that made this agreement possible. Now I am looking forward to this special task in German football, which we will approach with humility and patience: to form a team that fights for each other, that enjoys football, and for which people in our country can unite with full conviction," said Klopp.
The DFB also appointed former German national team defender Per Mertesacker as the new sporting director of DFB GmbH & Co. KG, thus replacing Andreas Rettig in this position, whose contract expires at the end of 2026.
"In the future, Mertesacker will be responsible for the areas of national teams and the academy," the statement notes.
Recall
The German Football Association announced the termination of the contract with Julian Nagelsmann after the unsuccessful performance of the German national team at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The DFB intends to hold talks with former Liverpool and Borussia coach Jürgen Klopp.
