Details

The Catherine Southon Auctions auction house sold glasses that John Lennon once gave to a casual acquaintance, a man named Michael, for 40 thousand pounds.

The glasses were bought by an anonymous foreign buyer.

The auction house reported that Lennon presented the glasses to Michael at Abbey Road Studios in 1968. Michael visited the studio, where a friend invited him on his birthday. According to Michael, he picked up Lennon's glasses, which were lying on the piano. Michael's girlfriend Penny asked him not to touch them, and John Lennon turned around and said: "It's okay. In fact, he can have them. Happy birthday!"

A collection of 33 black-and-white photographs of musicians taken by the owner of the glasses in 1968 and 1969 when he visited the Beatles' recording studio was also sold at the auction for £2,600. Some of the photos depicted Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Ringo Starr and George Martin.

Some of the images were taken on the same day as the famous photo shoot for the Abbey Road album, when the Beatles posed for pictures while crossing a zebra crosswalk.
