According to Western and Middle Eastern intelligence, an Iranian forces officer met with Georgian drug dealer Agil Aslan last fall and gave him a photo of the rabbi and instructions to eliminate him.
According to sources in the publication, Aslanov agreed to kill the rabbi for a reward of $200,000.
The plot, which was foiled in early January, also involved an attack on an educational center. Aslanov and his accomplice have already been arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit a terrorist act, according to a statement from the State Security Service of Azerbaijan.
Segal noted that he learned about the conspiracy and the detention of two suspects from the Azerbaijani press. He emphasized that he feels safe in Azerbaijan.
According to the investigation, Aslanov, who already had a criminal record, met in Iran with operatives of "Kuds", a division of the IRGC that deals with foreign operations. After returning to Baku, he recruited a local resident, Jeyhun Ismayilov, and together they began tracking the whereabouts of Shneor Segal.
According to representatives of the Azerbaijani special services, this case is one of many assassination attempts that Iran is trying to implement with the help of criminal elements in its campaign against figures of the Jewish and Iranian diaspora around the world.
