More than 30 pilot whales stranded on a beach in New Zealand have been returned to the ocean after conservationists and local residents helped lift them using sheets. According to the New Zealand Conservation Agency, four pilot whales died.
New Zealand is a hot spot for whale strandings.
The Department of Conservation told the Associated Press that a team of specialists monitored Ruakaka Beach near the town of Whangarei in northern New Zealand on Monday to make sure the rescued whales did not strand again.
"It's amazing to see the genuine care and compassion people are showing for these magnificent animals," said Joel Lauterbach, spokesman for the Department of Conservation, in a statement. - "This response demonstrates the deep connection we all have to our marine environment.
