American researchers have established the involvement of Russian satellites in a series of GPS malfunctions recorded in Europe and North America since 2019. This was reported by the Center for Countering Disinformation of the NSDC of Ukraine (CCD), according to UNN.
Details
It is noted that out of 75 cases of short-term GPS signal interference, it was established that in at least three of them, the source of radiation was satellites of the Russian missile attack early warning system. All cases were characterized by a signal of the same type and were primarily recorded over the territory of European countries.
These are satellites of the Unified Space System (USS), which are in "Molniya" type orbits and are designed to detect ballistic missile launches and nuclear explosions. Such interference affects the operation of navigation services, logistics systems, mobile applications with geolocation, and other technologies used daily by the civilian population,
It is indicated that the European Union is conducting its own investigation into the incidents and is working on improving systems for detecting and localizing such interference.
"Russia continues to use tools of hybrid influence against Western countries — from cyberattacks and sabotage to interference in the operation of navigation and communication systems," the CCD concludes.
Recall
The US stated there is a risk of a "space Pearl Harbor" due to Russia's plans to place nuclear weapons in orbit.
