Starting in 2027, Ukrainian schoolchildren will have access to a modern system of specialized education in high school. The reform should change outdated approaches, improve its quality and provide students with more opportunities. This is reported by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, UNN reports.
Details
High school students will be able to choose subjects for Advanced Study, as well as attend courses that are not related to the main profile.
In general, the educational system offers dozens of profiles grouped into three thematic clusters:
1. Language and literature: Ukrainian language and literature, foreign languages and literatures, etc.
2. STEM: science, IT, mathematics, etc.
3. Social and humanitarian: history, law, psychology, sociology, etc.
The school will become specialized, which provides for three levels of choice:
- Choosing a study profile — the students will study the profile subjects and courses in depth.
- Choosing subjects/courses within the profile — to individualize the study of the chosen profile.
- Choosing subjects/courses outside the profile to take into account the different interests of the students.
Specific mandatory subjects and courses will be determined by the Standard Educational Program, which the Ministry of Education and Science is already working on.
In grade 10, mandatory subjects will include subjects representing all educational fields defined by the State Standard of Specialized Secondary Education:
- language and literature (Ukrainian language, literature, foreign languages);
- mathematical (integrated mathematics course or algebra, geometry, etc.);
- natural sciences (integrated natural sciences course or physics, chemistry, biology, geography, etc.);
- civic and historical (history, civic education, etc.);
- social and health-preserving (courses related to well-being, health, etc.);
- computer science (computer science);
- physical culture (sports);
- artistic (music, painting, etc.);
- technological (technology, industrial design, etc.).
High school students will pay more attention to compulsory subjects in the 10th grade, which will be an adaptation year. Students will familiarize themselves with their chosen profile to make sure of their choice and change it if they wish. The number of elective subjects and courses will increase proportionally to the 12th grade, while the number of compulsory subjects will decrease.
Recall
The Ministry of Education has updated the rules for distance learning and studying abroad starting in the 2025-2026 academic year. The changes concern the minimum number of students in distance learning classes, children's education at TOT, and abroad.
