Manuel Adorni, an ally of President Milei, stepped down amid an investigation into expenses. He acknowledged undeclared savings of $500,000.

Head of the Cabinet of Ministers of Argentina Manuel Adorni, one of the closest associates of President Javier Milei, resigned amid a corruption scandal and investigation into his expenses. UNN reports this, citing Bloomberg.

Details

Adorni announced his resignation on Saturday, June 27. Prior to this, he had been at the center of a scandal for several months due to suspicions of illegal enrichment and expenses that, according to media reports, did not correspond to his official income.

Among the episodes that caused public outcry were expensive trips with his family, including a first-class vacation to Aruba during the Christmas period, as well as a flight on a private plane to Uruguay during the carnival season.

Adorni himself stated that all family trips were paid for with private funds, and that his wealth was allegedly accumulated before entering public service.

In his resignation letter, published on social network X, Adorni stated that he was leaving his post "with a clear conscience." He also insisted that he had not committed a crime and intends to prove this in court.

At the same time, this month the official admitted that he had undeclared savings for years. After that, he updated his property declarations for 2023 and 2024, adding about $500,000 that had not been previously indicated.

What you need to know about the main figure in the corruption scandal

Adorni was appointed head of the Cabinet of Ministers in November last year. Prior to that, he was the spokesman for Milei's government and was considered one of the key public faces of the administration.

Context

Adorni's resignation was a serious political blow for Milei, who came to power with promises to fight corruption and the political "caste." Earlier, the President of Argentina publicly defended his associate and stated that he would not remove him without a court decision.

The scandal surrounding Adorni increased pressure on Milei's government, which is already facing criticism over other corruption allegations, a decline in the purchasing power of the population, and a drop in presidential support.
