US Vice President Kamala Harris has won the Democratic presidential nomination, the party announced Monday. For the first time in the history of the United States, a black woman, the daughter of immigrants, who had a career in politics and law enforcement in California, will represent the Democrats in the elections for the head of the White House.
Harris won 99% of the vote, according to the Democratic National Committee.
She was the only candidate who had gathered enough delegate signatures to appear on the ballot, and the party had already declared on Friday that she had won enough votes to secure the nomination.
Next, the results will be certified by the secretary of the convention, and Harris will officially accept the nomination.
Harris was expected to make his vice presidential pick on Tuesday, August 6, ahead of the upcoming US presidential election in November.
