The ruling Georgian Dream party continues to develop the theme of the responsibility of its main opponent in the elections, the United National Movement, as well as the third President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili for the August 2008 war, UNN reports with reference to Novosti Georgia.
According to the newspaper, a new statement of the political council of the ruling party of Georgia on this topic has been circulated today.
"Mriya reiterates that "a public legal process will take place after the elections," while declaring the YDP "criminals" and "traitors" in advance.
The authors of the statement repeatedly refer to a new interview with Radio Liberty by Heidi Tagliavini, the head of the EU's international commission of inquiry into the causes of the war in Georgia. According to Georgian Dream, Tagliavini's words confirm that the actions of the then Georgian leadership allegedly provoked Russia.
"We have a situation where the political force responsible for the outbreak of the war in 2008, which has changed its country and people, is still driven by the desire to return to power. We believe that in such circumstances, the legal underestimation of the crime committed by the collective National Movement is tantamount to a crime. It is time to bring the criminals to justice to the fullest extent of the law... The majority of Georgian society rightly doubts Saakashvili's sanity. However, it is a fact that Saakashvili's adventurous actions in August 2008 were not the result of his mental imbalance, but the result of a betrayal ordered from the outside and well planned," the newspaper quoted the Georgian Dream statement as saying.
