The EU's attitude toward Georgia will change for the better when the “situation in the region” calms down. This was stated by Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Thursday, July 18, following the summit of the European Political Community in the UK, according to NewsGeorgia, UNN .

“First of all, it is important to end the war in Ukraine. We have high hopes that the war in Ukraine will end in a year at the latest, so the situation in the region will calm down, and all this will have a positive impact on the overall political situation in our region, as well as on the attitude towards Georgia,” the Georgian prime minister said.

According to Kobakhidze, he discussed Georgian-EU relations, community enlargement and the current agenda with the summit participants, including the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, and the head of the European Council, Charles Michel.

As you know, after the European Council summit, EU leaders decided to suspend Georgia's accession to the economic and political bloc because the country adopted the law “On Transparency of Foreign Influence.

Kobakhidze is from the Georgian Dream party, which is currently in power in Georgia and promoted the law on foreign agents.

The law on “foreign agents” is actually analogous to the law adopted in Russia. According to the document, media outlets and public organizations that receive funding from abroad will be granted the status of “agents of foreign influence.” Foreign agents are to be registered by the prosecutor's office, not the State Register Service. Violation of the law will be punishable by imprisonment for up to five years for individuals, and a fine for legal entities.
