Fire at an orphanage in Algeria claims lives of 11 children, 19 others injured

A fire broke out at an orphanage near the capital of Algeria, resulting in the deaths of 11 children and injuries to 19 others. President Tebboune expressed condolences, while the causes of the fire have not been reported.

On Thursday, a fire at a children's home near the Algerian capital killed 11 children and injured 19, UNN reports, citing AP.

The Algerian Civil Protection Agency said the fire broke out around 3:30 a.m. in a two-story children's home in Mohammadia, an eastern suburb of Algiers.

The ages of the deceased have not been disclosed, and authorities have not reported any adult deaths or injuries. The cause of the fire has not been released.

Five children with limited mobility were safely evacuated by rescue teams, and several injured were taken to a specialized burn hospital, said Lieutenant Colonel Nassim Bernaoui, head of the civil protection communications department.

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboun expressed condolences to those affected by the fire, which occurred on Algeria's National Children's Protection Day.

According to the Civil Protection Agency, Algeria is experiencing a heatwave that has led to nearly 1,000 fires in recent days.
