The European Commission expects the first tranche under the new 90 billion euro financial support package for Ukraine to be allocated by the end of June. This was stated by a European Commission spokesperson during a briefing on May 11, reports UNN.
The EC stated that the funds should arrive in the second quarter
During the briefing, journalists asked European Commission representatives about the timeline for providing the first tranche of aid to Ukraine and whether the funds could be allocated as early as next week.
The EC spokesperson stated that Brussels is "determined" to make the first payments in the second quarter of 2026.
"We expect to be able to allocate about 9 billion euros during June, at the latest," the spokesperson stated.
According to him, out of this amount, 5.9 billion euros are intended for Ukraine's defense needs, and another 3.2 billion are within the macro-financial assistance program.
The European Commission clarified that the completion of several necessary documents is currently ongoing, including the memorandum of understanding, the updated Ukraine Facility plan, and the loan agreement.
Brussels did not give a clear answer regarding payments as early as next week
Separately, journalists recalled a statement by European Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis, who previously suggested the possibility of the first payments as early as next week.
In response, the European Commission spokesperson did not directly confirm these dates, but did not refute them either.
"If our political leaders provide a guideline regarding the timeline, then who are we to deny it?" he stated.
At the same time, the EC representative added that work on the documents is continuing "day and night," and the main goal is to complete the procedures "in the very near future" and move to the fund allocation stage.
The first defense tranche will go toward Ukrainian drones
The European Commission also confirmed that the first defense tranche will concern the financing of drone production in Ukraine.
At the same time, negotiations regarding further purchases of weaponry and defense products are still ongoing.
