China has announced that it is introducing countermeasures against two Canadian organizations and 20 people involved in the protection of Uighur and Tibetan rights. This was reported by Reuters, according to UNN.
Details
The department said that the measures came into effect on December 21 and include an asset freeze and travel ban. The organizations sanctioned are the Uyghur Rights Project and the Canadian Tibetan Committee.
Human rights groups accuse Beijing of massively persecuting the Uighurs , a 10-million-strong Muslim ethnic minority in the western region of Xinjiang, including the massive use of forced labor in camps. China denies all allegations.
China seized control of Tibet in 1950, describing it as a “peaceful liberation” from a feudal serfdom. However, international human rights groups and people who have been forced to leave Tibet regularly condemn what they call China's repressive rule in Tibetan regions.
Inquiries from the publication to the Canadian Embassy in Beijing went unanswered. [Reuters also did not receive an immediate response from human rights groups or Global Affairs Canada.
