Sebastian Zapeta was arrested about six hours after police say he set fire to the clothes of a woman who appeared to be dozing on a stationary F train at the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue subway station in Brooklyn with a lighter.
On Monday, he was charged with murder and arson, police said.
The suspect reportedly entered the United States without authorization in 2018 and was deported to Guatemala a few days later. It is not known when he re-entered illegally, the US Department of Homeland Security said in a statement.
Police said that there was no prior contact between the attacker, a Brooklyn resident, and the victim, who has not been identified.
The Department of Homeland Security said in a statement that after Zapeta's release from a New York prison, he will be deported from the country.
