34-year-old Emma Hussey appeared in court in Sydney on Thursday after being charged with attempting to import a commercial quantity of methamphetamine into Australia. The maximum penalty in this case is life imprisonment.

Police allege that Hussey, along with a couple from South Australia, attempted to import the drugs hidden in bags of charcoal in shipping containers from Ghana. The estimated street value of the shipment is 296 million Australian dollars (208 million US dollars / 157 million pounds sterling).

Hussey was previously denied bail, with the next court hearing scheduled for August.

The actress played the role of Naz in the spin-off of the series "EastEnders" — E20, which first aired in 2010. She also appeared in Jason Statham's 2013 action film "Hummingbird", released in the US under the title Redemption.

The Australian police launched an investigation in April after border officials detected anomalies in two shipping containers that arrived at Port Botany in Sydney from Ghana.

An X-ray scan revealed a white crystalline substance in the cargo, which was declared as bags of charcoal. Further tests confirmed it was methamphetamine.

Police seized the drugs before the cargo was delivered to a warehouse in the Sydney suburb of Girraween.

According to the investigation, Hussey arrived at the warehouse and supervised the process while several men unloaded the container.

They loaded some of the bags into a car and drove to a house in Blacktown, where police later arrested Hussey. Electronic devices and a notebook were also seized.

As part of the investigation, police also arrested and charged a 30-year-old woman and a 32-year-old man in Adelaide for allegedly using false documents to rent warehouse premises in Sydney where the drugs were delivered.

The seizure of these drugs - with an estimated street value of 296 million dollars - prevented approximately 3.2 million doses from reaching the streets
