Following an investigation by the EU Commission, Apple has made significant changes to its app store policy in the European Union.

Writes UNN with reference to Euractiv.

Details

On Thursday (August 8), Apple changed its policy in the European Union. The new policy allows developers to promote offers and interact with customers directly from their apps, giving users more flexibility and choice.

The change is accompanied by two new fees.

This includes a 5% fee for attracting new users and a 10% fee for retail services for any sale made within the first 12 months after installing the app on the platform.

Currently, Apple charges three types of fees:

  • the main technology for less than 1% of applications,
  • reduced fees for all digital goods and services sold through the App Store;
  • additional fees for payments and commercial services.

AddendumAddendum

The two new fees will replace the reduced fee for all digital goods and services sold through the App Store.

For reference

Earlier, the EU criticized the commission that Apple charges for helping developers through the App Store to attract new customers. There have been statements that the fee goes beyond what is strictly necessary.

The charges against Apple are the first brought by the EU Commission under the landmark Digital Markets Act, which aims to limit the power of big tech. Violations can lead to a fine of up to 10% of the company's global annual turnover.
