Due to the latest eruption of Mount Etna in Sicily, Catania Airport suspended flights until Saturday. Over the course of a week, hundreds of flights were canceled or delayed, with the impact on infrastructure being the strongest in 20 years.

Operations at Catania Airport on the Italian Mediterranean island of Sicily have been suspended again due to the latest eruption of Mount Etna during the peak holiday season, UNN writes, citing dpa.

Arrivals and departures will be prohibited until 2:00 a.m. (3:00 a.m. Kyiv time) on Saturday, the airport said late Thursday. Travelers were advised not to go to the airport without first checking the status of their flight with the relevant airline.

On Thursday, airport operator SAC extended the ban on arrivals until 8:00 a.m. Friday. Operations depend on volcanic activity, as well as the wind direction and the concentration of ash in the air.

Since the eruption began a week ago, hundreds of flights have been canceled, delayed, or diverted.

SAC said the impact on the airport's infrastructure was the most severe in 20 years.
