An airplane flying from Amsterdam to Mexico City was forced to make an emergency landing in Bermuda due to an unusual problem: a strong odor from 100 pigs in the cargo hold spread throughout the plane, including the cockpit. An emergency landing was necessary to ventilate the plane.
“The peculiar smell of the 100 pigs traveling in the hold prompted the crew to head to Bermuda to get some fresh air,” said Skyport, the operator of LBJ International Airport.
The pigs were unloaded and placed in the airport's former mail handling facility. KLM passengers and crew were processed by immigration authorities and accommodated in hotels.
The plane was aired out, and 30 hours later, the passengers continued on their way to Mexico. The pigs, in turn, were left on the island under the supervision of veterinarians. According to the Bermuda authorities, the animals were provided with everything they needed during their forced stopover.
Addendum
This is not the first time an airplane has had to land due to an unpleasant odor. A flight from Houston to Washington had to be diverted due to severe flatulence in a passenger. The situation was so serious that crew members vomited and passengers asked for masks, the New York Post reports.
