Acting President of Venezuela Delcy Rodríguez stated that the country will not become the "51st state of the USA" following corresponding remarks by American President Donald Trump. The day before, Donald Trump stated in an interview with Fox News that he is "seriously considering the possibility" of making Venezuela the 51st US state. The American president has previously made similar statements regarding Canada. The White House has not yet officially commented on these words.
Rodríguez's statements were made during hearings in the case regarding the territorial dispute between Venezuela and Guyana over the Essequibo region.
