The UN designated April 2 as Autism Awareness Day to combat stigma. The community promotes neurodiversity and inclusion in education and employment.

Every year on April 2, the global community observes World Autism Awareness Day, established by the UN General Assembly in 2007. The main goal of this day is to draw public attention to the needs of people with autism spectrum disorders, overcome stigmatization, and promote their full integration into society, writes UNN.

What is autism spectrum disorder?

Autism is not a disease, but a peculiarity of a person's neurological development. It affects how a person perceives the world around them, processes information, and interacts with other people.

The word "spectrum" in the name emphasizes that autism manifests itself in different ways. There are no two identical people with ASD. Some may have outstanding intellectual abilities but face difficulties in social communication. Others may be non-verbal and require constant support. Someone may live completely independently, only occasionally needing adaptation of their work or study space.

Symbolism of this day

Traditionally, the symbol of this day was blue, due to the mass campaign "Light It Up Blue". However, in recent years, the autism community itself more often uses the infinity symbol, most often gold or rainbow. It symbolizes neurodiversity - a scientific and social concept that different types of human brain function are a natural variation in the population, not a mistake of nature.

Why is this day critically important?

Stereotypes still exist in society that autism is caused by "bad parenting" or is a consequence of vaccination, which has been repeatedly and definitively disproven by science. The dissemination of evidence-based medical information helps to combat these prejudices. The earlier a child with ASD receives a correct diagnosis and professional support, the easier it will be for them to adapt to independent living.

The world must adapt to neurodivergent people, creating inclusive classrooms in schools and equal opportunities in the labor market. People with autism often have a high level of concentration, exceptional attention to detail, and unconventional logical thinking, which makes them valuable specialists in many fields - from IT to art.
