The US military carried out an airstrike in southern Somalia, killing two members of the al-Qaeda-affiliated al-Shabaab group, including a senior commander.

The strike was carried out on Tuesday about 10 kilometers (six miles) southwest of the town of Quino Barrow, south of Mogadishu.
"Two al-Shabab members were killed in the attack and no civilians were injured. The African Command is taking steps to prevent harm to civilians," the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) said in a statement .
The Somali government issued a statement praising the "carefully planned operation" conducted with "international partners" in the same area.
