The FBI and other federal agencies have reported that Iran viewed this year's presidential election as particularly important and conducted hacking and influence operations to interfere with American politics, as well as to foment discord and undermine confidence in democratic institutions.
“We have observed Iran's increasingly aggressive actions during this election cycle, including influence operations targeting the American public and cyberattacks targeting presidential candidates' campaigns,” the FBI, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Agency said in a joint statement.
According to intelligence reports, Iranian hackers tried to gain access to individuals who had direct access to the presidential campaigns of both political parties. The FBI is also investigating attempts to infiltrate the campaign of Democratic candidate Kamala Harris.
