On January 1, Ukraine stopped the transit of Russian natural gas through its territory in the interests of national security. This was reported by the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine, UNN reports.

At 07:00, gas supply through the Ukrainian gas transportation system was stopped. International partners were notified in accordance with the established procedures.
Stopping transit is an important milestone, as it means a shift away from Russian gas, which comes against the backdrop of the European Repower EU initiative aimed at reducing dependence on energy resources from Russia. Ukraine, as noted, has prepared its gas transportation infrastructure to operate without transit, ensuring a stable supply of gas for domestic consumption.
Refusal from Russian gas also has an economic impact on the terrorist state, which will lose important markets and suffer financial losses. European countries have already made a choice in favor of diversifying energy supplies, which also confirms the strategic importance of this step for energy security.
