The political elite of the Russian Federation does not want to finally turn Russia into a raw material appendage of China, but Moscow has neither the people nor the strength to fight Beijing. As Kovalenko noted, the political elite of the Russian Federation looks toward Europe and dreams of reviving the influence of the USSR era in the countries of Eastern Europe.
Thus, they want to infringe on China's interests in Europe, because Beijing's formula is a "Chinese Europe," where the classic EU does not exist as a subject, but there are countries oriented toward China. Russia, in turn, seeks to have leverage over Beijing and invests resources in splitting the EU. But there is Ukraine, without which even in theory such an idea of the Russian Federation is not realistic, because Ukraine is a power and in many aspects a competitor to Russia. At the same time, Russia is trying with all its might to weaken Ukraine, and is also trying to weaken the EU by corrupting political elites and creating conditions for the victory of pro-Russian forces.
In such a worldview of the Russians, however, there are two important things. Each of these paths leads exclusively to the collapse of the empire. The only question is the timeframes.
