The number of people who died by suicide in Japan fell to the second-lowest level in 2024 since records began in 1978, according to a health ministry report based on National Police Agency statistics.
At the same time, the number of suicides among elementary, junior high, and high school students was 527. This is the highest figure since the relevant records began in 1980 – it is kept by the country's Ministry of Health.
The total number of suicides among men decreased by 1,099 compared to the previous year and amounted to 13,763. At the same time, 6,505 women committed suicide, which is 470 less than last year.
