An earthquake of magnitude 4.7 struck in the area of the Campi Flegrei volcanic caldera. The tremors led to power outages and damage to buildings, with no casualties.

A powerful earthquake struck near the Italian city of Naples in the area of the Campi Flegrei volcanic caldera, becoming one of the strongest in recent decades. This was reported by ANSA and Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), writes UNN.

Details

According to INGV, the epicenter of the earthquake was at a depth of about 3 kilometers in the Campi Flegrei area – a large volcanic caldera west of Naples. Preliminary estimates put the magnitude of the tremors at 4.7, making this earthquake one of the most powerful in the area in the last 40 years.

The tremors were felt by residents of Naples and the neighboring city of Pozzuoli. In some areas, clouds of dust rose, stones fell from slopes onto roads, and some cars were damaged.

Train traffic halted and infrastructure being checked

According to ANSA, several neighborhoods in Naples experienced power outages. For safety reasons, authorities temporarily suspended local railway routes while specialists checked the condition of the infrastructure.

As of the evening, no official information about deaths or injuries had been received. At the same time, local media report minor damage to buildings in Pozzuoli. Technical services are on site, inspecting residential buildings and infrastructure facilities.

The Campi Flegrei are considered one of the most active volcanic areas in Europe. Series of small earthquakes are regularly recorded here due to the phenomenon of bradyseism – the slow rising and falling of the earth's surface associated with volcanic processes beneath the caldera. However, tremors of this magnitude occur much less frequently and each time attract increased attention from seismologists and local authorities.

After the earthquake, civil protection services and INGV specialists continue to monitor the situation. Authorities have urged residents to remain calm, follow official announcements, and be prepared for possible aftershocks.
