The Telegram messenger was fined 7 million rubles for refusing to remove content with calls for terrorist attacks and protests. The platform, founded by Pavel Durov, remains popular in russia and Ukraine.

A moscow court has imposed a fine of 7 million rubles (approximately $80,000) on the Telegram messenger for refusing to remove content calling for terrorist attacks and participation in protests aimed at overthrowing the russian government. This is reported by russian media, reports UNN.

Details

This decision was made on Tuesday, the TASS news agency said.

According to court documents, Telegram failed to comply with the requirement to remove content containing calls for violent actions, including calls to participate in protests aimed at overthrowing the russian government, as well as terrorist acts, including on railway transport.

Although the company did not immediately respond to a request from journalists, Telegram remains one of the most popular messaging applications in Russia and other countries.

The platform was founded by russian Pavel Durov and now has billions of users worldwide, including a significant portion of users in Ukraine.

Recall

Telegram now has over 1 billion monthly active users, 50 million more than in July 2024. Thus, Telegram has become the second most popular messenger in the world, not counting the Chinese WeChat. However, WhatsApp remains the leader with about 3 billion users.
