"Cinia Oy's C-Lion1 submarine cable running between Finland and Germany has a malfunction," according to a press release from Cinia, a state-owned company that builds fiber optic networks and provides telecommunications services.

Samuli Bergström , director of Traficom's Cyber Security Center , confirmed to Yle that the cable was damaged.

"We are currently investigating the reasons for this. Interference can occur from time to time, and there may be several reasons, for example, they are sensitive to weather conditions and damage caused by shipping. The important thing is that the problems have been identified and measures have been taken to eliminate them," Bergström said.

According to Cinia's press release, the malfunction was noticed after four in the morning on Monday.

The 1173-kilometer-long cable runs between Santagamina in Helsinki and Rostock in Germany.

The cause of the malfunction is still unknown.

Cinia reports that the repair vessel is ready to go to the site and that repair work has already begun. The exact time of the repair is not yet known, but usually the repair time for submarine cables is between 5 and 15 days.

The C-Lion1 submarine cable was launched in 2016. It is the only submarine cable in Finland that leads directly to Central Europe.
