Eight cases of hantavirus and three deaths have been recorded on board the MV Hondius. Medics have begun testing and preparing for the evacuation of passengers.

The Spanish Ministry of Health reported that health specialists have boarded the vessel MV Hondius, where a hantavirus outbreak was recorded, to conduct a final inspection and begin the disembarkation of passengers, UNN reports citing Sky News.

Earlier, experts inspected the vessel upon its arrival in Tenerife and found no rodents on board.

According to the shipping company, the disembarkation of passengers is planned to begin around 09:00 Kyiv time.

Before the evacuation, Spanish medics are conducting testing of the passengers.

As reported by El Pais, repatriation may be delayed as it has not been possible to promptly organize flights home for all passengers. Some airlines, particularly Dutch ones, have already changed their routes and flight schedules.

The arrival of the liner also sparked a dispute between Spain's central government and the leadership of the Canary Islands. The head of the autonomous region, Fernando Clavijo, refused to allow the vessel to dock in the port.

It was previously reported that eight people on board the MV Hondius fell ill, three of whom have died.
