In South Sudan, the country's first vice president, Riek Machar, a longtime rival of President Salva Kiir, has been placed under house arrest. AFP reported this, reports UNN.
Machar was arrested on Wednesday, March 26. Local media reported that Machar's guards were disarmed and he himself was served with a detention warrant.
Meanwhile, the UN Mission in South Sudan has called on all political parties to exercise restraint amid rising tensions across the country.
Riek Machar was the Vice President of South Sudan in 2011-2013 and the First Vice President in 2016. In 2020, he again became the First Vice President of South Sudan. Salva Kiir has been the President of South Sudan since July 2011, when the state declared its independence from Sudan.
Today, South Sudan is the youngest member state of the United Nations. During the 20th century, two civil wars took place on this territory: the south of Sudan, mostly populated by Christians, fought with the rest of the country, most of which are Muslims. The conflict ended in 2005 with the signing of a peace agreement.
