An attempt to impeach South Korean President Yoon Suk Yule failed due to a boycott of the ruling party. After the vote, the party leader unexpectedly called on the president to resign due to the martial law scandal.

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yule survived an impeachment attempt. However, the future of his presidency remains uncertain due to the crisis caused by the short-term decree on the introduction of martial law.  This is reported by Reuters, reports UNN.

Details

The impeachment vote failed due to a boycott of the ruling People's Power Party (PNP), which provided insufficient votes to make a decision. However, after the vote, PNP leader Han John Hoon said the party had decided that the president should resign.

The situation is complicated by the tense relations between Yoon and Khan, so it remains unclear whether this statement represents the official position of the entire party. The president himself has not yet commented on Khan's words.

Recall

The crisis was triggered by Yun's decision on Tuesday to grant the military emergency powers to fight "anti-state forces" and political opponents. The decision drew sharp resistance from parliament, which unanimously voted against the decree, forcing the president to cancel it only six hours later.

The declaration of martial law dealt a serious blow to the image of South Korea, which until now was considered an example of successful democracy in Asia. The country, which is the region's fourth-largest economy and a key U.S. ally, is facing the deepest political crisis in decades.

Earlier, Yoon made a televised statement apologizing for his decision, but did not announce his intentions to resign.
