The International Academy of Astronautics (IAA) has updated its recommendations for actions in the event of detecting possible signs of extraterrestrial intelligence. For the first time in over 15 years, the document stipulates that any decision to send a response to a potential extraterrestrial civilization must be made only after international consultations. This is stated in the updated IAA declaration, reports UNN.
Details
According to the new principles, researchers who record a possible signal or other evidence of the existence of extraterrestrial intelligence must first thoroughly verify the discovery through independent observations. Only after confirmation should the information be brought to the attention of the international scientific community, relevant international organizations, and the public.
The decision on a response must be international
The updated recommendations also determine that no single state, organization, or scientific group should independently make a decision to transmit a message to a possible extraterrestrial civilization.
