Details

It is noted that the enemy launched strikes on two boats of the Maritime Search and Rescue Service, which were performing a humanitarian mission within the Ukrainian maritime corridor.

Both vessels, in accordance with international law, had the appropriate color and SAR (Search and Rescue) markings, indicating their purpose for searching for and rescuing people on the water

- the Navy of the AFU points out.

They emphasize that search and rescue vessels have special protection under international humanitarian law. In particular, Article 27 of the Second Geneva Convention of 1949 explicitly provides for the protection of vessels used by the state or officially recognized rescue organizations exclusively for conducting search and rescue operations and providing assistance to people at sea.

This attack is further evidence of the Russian Federation's deliberate disregard for the norms of international law and the creation of a direct threat to the safe functioning of humanitarian maritime corridors in the Black Sea

- the Navy stressed.
