The vessel Sparta arrived in Tartus under escort to unload military goods. This is Russia's first delivery to Syria since the change of power in the country.

The Russian cargo ship "Sparta" has arrived at the Syrian port of Tartus, accompanied by warships. This may be the first confirmation of the resumption of Russian military cargo supplies to Syria following the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime. This was reported by "Agentstvo," according to UNN.

According to researchers, satellite imagery analyzed by OSINT projects InsiderGeo and SONARROW_OSINT from May 11 recorded the unloading of the vessel in Tartus. It is currently unknown exactly what the "Sparta" was carrying; however, indirect evidence suggests it was either military cargo or dual-use equipment.

"The frigate 'Admiral Flota Kasatonov' was positioned near the cargo ship. Additionally, on the eve of the convoy's arrival, the corvette 'Stoikiy' left the port, which analysts suggest was ensuring the safe passage of the vessels," the report states.

As noted, after passing Gibraltar, the ships stopped transmitting data about their location. At least two vessels transmitted false coordinates, claiming to be in the Baltic Sea.

OSINT researchers suggest that the supplies may be linked to negotiations between Moscow and the new Syrian authorities regarding the future of Russian military bases in the country.

According to the publication, the new Syrian leadership is prepared to allow Russia to maintain limited access to the port of Tartus and the Hmeimim airbase, but only on the condition that it benefits Syria.

The report also recalls that in 2026, Russia became the primary supplier of oil to Syria, and in late April, media reported on Damascus's plans to transform the Hmeimim base into a training center for the Syrian military.

The loss of bases in Syria is considered a serious strategic risk for Moscow, as Tartus and Hmeimim are key points for the Russian presence in the Middle East and Africa.
