The Russian government has decided to temporarily suspend operations at railway border crossing points with Estonia, Latvia, and Finland starting July 1. Most of the crossing points were already not functioning; in particular, Finland closed its land border back in April 2024.

The Russian government has decided to temporarily suspend the operation of several railway checkpoints on the border with Estonia, Latvia, and Finland. This was reported by the BBC, writes UNN.

Details

The corresponding resolution of the Russian government was published on June 30. The document states that the operation of the checkpoints will be "temporarily suspended" from July 1, but the duration of this decision and its reasons are not specified.

On the Russian-Finnish border, the checkpoints in Vyborg, Värtsilä, Luttu, St. Petersburg, and Svetogorsk have been affected by the restrictions. Also closing are the railway checkpoint Pechory-Pskovskiye on the border with Estonia and the Pytalovo checkpoint on the border with Latvia.

Most checkpoints were already not operating

As the BBC notes, most of these checkpoints were already not functioning. In particular, Finland completely closed its land border with Russia back in April 2024.

Helsinki explained this decision by saying that Moscow, in the opinion of the Finnish authorities, was deliberately directing illegal migrants from third countries to the border. Russia denied these accusations.

In the Russian State Duma, they threatened to "blow up half of Finland" because it is "turning into a second Ukraine"27.06.26, 16:17
