The 2025 presidential election in the country will be held again after the Constitutional Court of Romania decided to annul the results of the first round of elections held in late November.
The court's decision was a response to declassified data pointing to “hybrid attacks” during the election process. In this context, Romania's Supreme Security Council confirmed that the country faced numerous cyberattacks and interference with election platforms. In particular, 85 thousand cyberattacks were aimed at exploiting vulnerabilities in the voting system.
At the center of the scandal is far-right candidate Calin Georgescuwho won the first round of the election, although polls before the vote predicted that he would have a much lower chance. Georgescu made extensive use of TikTok during the election campaign, which garnered him significant support on social media, but now there are suspicions of illegal campaign financing and external interference.
