Remnants of the Russian private military company "Wagner" led by the son of Yevgeny Prigozhin have created a drug empire in Central Africa and control the drug trade. This is reported by UNN with reference to The Wall Street Journal.
Details
According to the publication, Russian mercenaries control gold mines in hard-to-reach areas of the upper Ubangi River. Each year, they receive approximately $180 million in revenue.
The militants also earn additional profit from smuggling high-dose tramadol to other African countries.
Additionally
Tramadol is a potent synthetic opioid analgesic. It is used to relieve acute and chronic pain syndromes of moderate to high intensity.
Tramadol is also called "cocaine for the poor" because in large doses it acts as a strong stimulant. As The Wall Street Journal notes, tramadol is used by miners at gold mines, as well as by militants to suppress fear, fatigue, and increase their endurance.
